Morata the hero for Madrid - but 'untouchable' BBC a big problem for Zidane & Real

Alvaro Morata made it a 24th birthday to remember. Even though the Spain striker was left on the bench by Zinedine Zidane until late in the second half, the former Juventus forward bundled home the winner against Athletic Club to give Real Madrid a special gift - outright leadership of La Liga.

It was something that had looked likely after Karim Benzema scored the opener after only seven minutes, but this was another poor performance from Los Blancos and there were jeers from the home fans at half-time with the scores level at 1-1.

There had been chances prior to the interval for both Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, but Sabin Merino had taken advantage of some dreadful defending at the other end and the match was very much in the balance.

After Atletico lost 1-0 at Sevilla earlier on Sunday, the opportunity was there for Madrid to top the table with a win over Athletic. But there were more whistles from the Bernabeu crowd as Inaki Williams was allowed a clear run at goal - only to blast over the bar.

It was a let-off for Real and then, something strange happened. Zidane opted to make a change, but with his front three apparently untouchable, he sent on the in-form Lucas Vazquez for Isco, probably his side's finest performer in the match up until that point. And more jeers followed as the supporters showed their dislike for the decision.

Instead, the change should have come further forward. Benzema was disappointing again after his goal, while Cristiano Ronaldo remains a pale shadow of his best version in this, his worst season start at Real. Bale, the better of the three, was also imprecise when it came to the final pass or finish.

Ronaldo missed a number of chances, but he would have had a tap-in had Bale passed instead of shooting when the two were clean through on goal. The Portuguese, however, cut a frustrated figure and also misplaced passes. He is nowhere near his usual level right now - and Madrid need him back soon.

Eventually, it was Benzema who made way as Morata came on with just over 15 minutes left and Madrid gain intensity with both he and Lucas on the pitch. Indeed, it was the striker's persistence that won Real the match as he saw his shot from a Bale cross saved by Gorka Iraizoz but bundled home from close range with seven minutes remaining to seal a vital win.

Still there was time for Raphael Varane to let in Williams at the other end after another careless mistake, while Madrid's fans applauded as their team wasted time at a throw-in and a corner ahead of the final whistle.

Then Ronaldo went one-on-one with Gorka, only to shoot straight at the goalkeeper, and the trident's flailing form is starting to prove a real problem right now for Zidane - especially as the Frenchman feels he has to pick his three famous forwards week in, week out.

For Madrid to enjoy success this term, however, he may have to reconsider that strategy until the trio return to their best - even if Florentino Perez doesn't like it.
